About

I am an Associate Professor at Dalhousie University (as of July 24). I received my Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

My work focuses the relationship between social isolation and health, misogyny in online communities, and how emerging science is changing how we understand mental health. These projects have received support from the Mellon Foundation, the Killam Trusts, the Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research, the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation, and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council. I am currently leading a SSHRC funded study of the experiences of socially isolated men. I am also collaborating with with colleagues in nursing, psychology, medicine, and computer science.

I do digital sociology, in-depth interviews, and ethnography. My research appears in journals such as Social Problems, Gender & Society, Social Science & Medicine, Society and Mental Health, New Media & Society, and the Journal of Health and Social Behavior. My work has been discussed in the media, including Newsweek, The Globe & Mail, Salon, CTV, The National Post, and CBC.
